First off, No, I didn't fall on my head or lose my man card (though this article may get it revoked). I am writing this for a few reasons. 1)I think its time to try and attract a few female readers (cheap plug). 2) I feel this young lady has gotten criticized way too much (she is 20 years old..who is so perfect that they didn't do crazy things at that age). Most importantly, the album isn't that bad..there are some pretty catchy and creative songs to be heard.
Surprisingly, there are quite a few positives to this album, Miley shows that she has some talent when not embarrassing herself. She shows a bit of versatility in the vocals, much more range than I expected. The lyrical content had greater depth than you would think (though I don't believe Dylan has anything to worry about). In an attempt to get away from bubble gum pop, Bangerz has some banging hip hop like beats thanks to producers like Will.I.Am, Pharrell Williams, and others. Finally, just the pure courage to go away from a well established comfort zone for uncharted waters deserves some credit.
Despite my praise, this album does have some shortcomings that I must call out! Ms. Cyrus does at times go a bit off the deep end in trying to sound too bad ass. It's also hard to buy a southern girl that was born and raised in Nashville and Hollywood speaking so much ebonics and jive (I'm sure the rich girl spends a ton of time in da hood). Though I believe she is definitely a young woman trying to find herself, she tries way too hard to project that image on the album.
There are two particular songs that stand out as best and worst. The single "wrecking ball", despite the controversial video, is a really well-put together emotional song that sums up relationships in a nutshell. "Love, Money, Party" would be my least favorite. The song is just too over the top with a terrible beat and Cyrus trying way too hard to be a hiphop badass (this girl doesn't know if she is country, street, pop or what...identity crisis?)
Aside from Miley Cyrus's overall strange new personality...(twerking/weird tongue thing) i have to give her credit for pulling off a solid new album. I give it 7.5/10 twerks (well not literally). She rose to the occasion despite a tremendous amount of pressure and potential criticism. Aside from all of the image driven drama that is Miley...she did prove that a true artist will rise to the challenge...hard twerk pays off!
