The Lex List: Top Teams to Own in Madden 25 - PART 2

6/23/2013

Picture
Last week on The Lex List, we looked at the top 5 AFC teams to own in the upcoming Madden NFL 25, due out on August 27th. This week, we'll be running down the top 5 NFC teams to own in Madden NFL 25, as well as some honorable mentions. Let's go!
Picture

5) Green Bay Packers

Picture
Lambeau Field
Stadium Opened: 1957
Last Playoff Appearance: 2012
Key Player: Aaron Rodgers

Lambeau field is old in name, but it's been recently renovated and is in great shape. The special thing about Green Bay is, at the moment, they are a Shareholder team. They have several owners, and you can continue that route or you can take the whole team over for yourself. While it may just be all the same in the game, you'll know the differences. Now the fans will be looking at you to make every decision a perfect one. Luckily, you'll have a franchise guy like Aaron Rodgers, but if you don't like Rodgers, that could pose a problem. The Packers are steeped in tradition and it would be a challenge to keep that going.

4) St. Louis Rams

Picture
Edward Jones Dome
Stadium Opened: 1995
Last Playoff Appearance: 2004
Key Player: Sam Bradford

The focus of the Rams, should you decide to take ownership, is the stadium. The Edward Jones Dome isn't that old, but it's in desperate need of renovations and the current ownership is having trouble getting the cities cooperation. In fact, the rams want half the stadium rebuilt. The project would cost $700m. At that point, is it worth keeping the team in St. Louis? Is it time to bring the Rams back to LA? The playoff drought has been rough on fans, and the Rams play in one of the toughest divisions with Seattle and San Francisco constantly finishing better in the standings. How would you bring the fans spirits back up? Would you call for a complete rebuilding of the offense, or continue to have faith in Sam Bradford?

3) Minnesota Vikings

Picture
Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
Stadium Opened: 1982
Last Playoff Appearance: 2012
Key Player: Adrian Peterson

Now we're ramping up. Let's start with the stadium. The H.H.H. Metrodome is ready to be retired. Everyone remembers the roof caving in due to snowfall a few years back. A new stadium is on the horizon, but probably won't be up until 2016. Luckily, we have video game football to speed time up. The first line of order should be to build yourself a new stadium. It's going to cost lots of money, sure, but there's a plan in place. You can get one of those fancy retractable roofs, but I'm an open roof man, myself. Let it snow! After that's taken care of, it's time to get Adrian Peterson a Super Bowl ring. Bolster your roster for Peterson. Solidify that offensive line. Make Adrian want to retire a Viking. He'll be a sure-fire Hall of Famer, so you'll want him on your squad until the end. If you succeed, you'll be sitting pretty with a new stadium and a Super Bowl Trophy in your clutches sooner than later. That's a license to print money.

2) dALLAS cOWBOYS

Picture
New Cowboys Stadium
Stadium Opened: 2009
Last Playoff Appearance: 2009
Key Player: Demarcus Ware

One of the best things about playing a video game is using your imagination to accompany what the developers have designed for you. While Jerry Jones probably isn't going anywhere any time soon, that doesn't mean he can't "go away" in Madden 25. With a brand new Stadium and one of the biggest markets in the league, Dallas is set up nicely so that you can focus on improving the team. My first action? TRADE TONY ROMO. I've never been a fan and maybe he can fetch a good price in the trade market. Either way, it's time to find a new centerpiece for this Dallas offense. Dez Bryant has the ability to be an absolute freak in video game-football. The Cowboys are one of the most storied franchises in the league and it would be a fun challenge to try and reclaim the moniker "America's Team."

1) Washington Redskins

Picture
FedEx Field
Stadium Opened: 1997
Last Playoff Appearance: 2012
Key Player: Robert Griffin III

Ok, Snyder. That's enough. We'll take over from here. After many years of "big free agents," the Redskins finally got their marquee player, and he came via the draft. Robert Griffin III is arguably the perfect figurehead for a squad and would be any owners dream. It's up to you to keep him healthy though. The field has to be in tip-top shape, unlike last year. And what about those against the name "Redskins?" Do you humor them and move the squad? Do you tell them to get bent and keep the team as-is? Regardless, on the field, the Redskins look like an extremely promising squad with two key pieces in Alfred Morris and RGIII playing for many years to come. But let's play pretend for a bit and assume that RGIII re-injures his leg and has to make an early retirement.... what then? That's the variable in this scenario. Do you quickly change your bet and trade Griffin, or do you let it ride and take the risk/reward route?

Thanks for reading another edition of The Lex List. You can leave a comment below and let me know what your pick for NFC team to own would be. You can also follow me on Twitter @The_Lexicon. In the coming days, as a bonus, I will be going over some honorable mentions for teams to own in Madden NFL 25 that I didn't cover in either Part 1 or Part 2. Thanks again for reading and don't forget to check out all the cool stuff here on RantemRadio.com!

Experimenting with Minecraft: Seeds

Minecraft is a magical game. Fueled by your creativity and sense of adventure, you're essentially dropped into a random, shape-able world and given free reign to do whatever you'd like. Avid players of Minecraft, such as myself, often times get board with just one save file, so I went to Facebook and asked for random phrases to try as new seeds. Seeds are basically a random or user-typed line of DNA for your world. The combinations of numbers, letters, and symbols will generate the world you're about to be dropped in. Let's check out what some of these folks came up with. NOTE: If you want to try these for yourself, these are all case-sensitive.

We'll be exploring some more seeds tomorrow, as I don't want to overload the page with too many images. These were great, but I guarantee you that what's coming up is even better! Go check these seeds out if you're bored with the ones you have now and let me know what you find!

2nd Chance Home Video Review:  The Guilt Trip

By Tommy Dennis:

Not All Movies Are Blockbusters or Critically Acclaimed. For Every Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire...There are Ten Giglis. Somewhere in Between Most Films Live in the DVD/BluRay World Waiting For Us.

This month's candidate for reincarnation is The Guilt Trip starring Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand. The movie boasted the presence of a living legend and one of the hottest young writers/actors. Yet the film barely broke even at the domestic box office. It eeked out a sparse $41 Million on a $40 Million budget. Despite generally favorable reviews, Guilt Trip came and went so fast it wasn't even a conflicted journey.

Unfortunately, The Guilt Trip was not a victim of a miscarriage of justice...it deserved it's echo laced theater run. Their was very little chemistry between the two main characters. The on screen bond or lack there of made it impossible to justify ten bucks.

On paper, it would seem that Rogen and Streisand would be a Mother/Son match made in heaven. Both have that rapid fire delivery with some chutzpah. At the same time, Rogen and Streisand have always managed to remain loveable while delivering one-liners. Unfortunately, the bad chemistry and overdone mother/son strained relationship plot made a deep hole to climb from.

With that said, the movie has some redeeming qualities. Seth and Barbara do not set the world on fire as a duo but still entertain individually. Both have some funny lines here and there that are good for a few laughs. Watching the story unfold and the characters relationship grow is touching to anyone that loves their mom. It makes for an entertaining and economic way to enjoy a night with family or a significant other.

I will charitably give The Guilt Trip a 6.5 out of 10 out of respect to the talent and honest effort involved in this misguided feel good story. By no means was this a movie worth going into debt to go see...but there are worse ways to kill a night at home.

REVIEW: The Last of Us by Lex

6/16/2013

Picture
This is my first video game review for RantEM, and boy did I choose a doozy. Let me give you some quick info on how my reviews will work from here-on-out. I will break the review up into categories. This is done to keep myself from rambling too much, which I'm known to do on occasion. Secondly, I'll be keeping this review spoiler free. I'll reserve all spoiler discussion for The Game Time Report ONLY WHEN WE HAVE A "SPOILER SHOW." And finally, I score all games out of 10. This is only done to give you a better idea of how much I enjoyed the game at the time that I played it. Think of it as a school grading scale. 10 and 9 are A's, 8 is a B, 7 a C, 6 a D, and 1-5 are just varying degrees of fail. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to some Last of Us!

*REVIEW IS FOR SINGLE PLAYER ONLY*

Story

The story of The Last of Us is a solid tale of a pandemic that spreads via plant spores. Humans who breath in these spores become blood-thirsty, zombified lunatics. If the infection gets bad enough, they turn into creatures straight out of Silent Hill. You play mainly as Joel, a man from San Antonio trying to survive in this twisted version of post apocalyptic America. From what you've probably seen, you are accompanied by a teenage girl named Ellie, but the game doesn't start from that point. I'm going to avoid telling you exactly how it starts, but let's say that you're in for a bit of backstory that's pretty important to the rest of the game. It's really tough to speak about such a complex story without giving spoilers, so this might seem a bit vague, but believe me when I say it's for your benefit.
Picture
What tops the story is the way it's presented, which makes the decent tale seem like a masterpiece. The way action scenes smoothly transition into cut scenes is, at times, seamless. The musical score is on point and both haunting and emotional at the same time. But the best of all is the incredible voice acting. Joel is voice by video game VO vet Troy Baker (Bioshock: Infinite, Ninja Gaiden III), and Ellie is voiced by Ashley Johnson (Growing Pains, King of the Hill) who brings so much to the character that I'd go as far to say it's one of the best performances I've ever heard. The character of Ellie is also well rounded in her writing and makes for a good match with Joel's "Keep your distance" disposition. The other characters, which I won't mention for spoiler reasons, are all pretty well thought out, but it's obvious that Joel and Ellie got most of the prep.

Gameplay

The combat system gives you the option of playing one of two ways. Either you can go all Snake on your foes by sneaking up from behind and putting them down with a chokehold or a shiv, or you can go in guns blazing. Since ammunition is scarce for the most part, stealth may be your best option, even if it takes you a bit longer to get through a level. What shocked me was the presence of a crafting system. The crafting system isn't all that deep, but it's definitely a welcome addition. In the crafting menu, you can craft such items as Nail Bombs, Med Packs, and Shivs. Switch over to the next tab and you can use pills that you find throughout different levels to increase things such as your Max Health and Hearing. Speaking of Hearing, you can use this skill to see through walls, so long as your enemies are making noise. It's not a skill I used often, but it's there when you need it. There are also workbenches throughout the game that you can put those "gears" scattered throughout levels to upgrade your weapons with faster reload times, bigger clip capacity, and more. Enemies are distracted by sound, and you can throw empty bottles and bricks to distract them to a general location.
Picture
The weapons available are, for the most part, the norm. Pistols, shotguns, hunting rifles, etc. The melee weapons do vary a bit, as you can add blades to baseball bats and make yourself one hell of a skull-splitter. With most cover/stealth games, the controls can get frustrating at times, and the gameplay is especially tedious in the last few hours of the game, but it's the story that drives you forward without thinking twice. This is just one of those games that you have to beat. The game took me about 15 hours to complete on Normal difficulty, which is in that wheelhouse of 8-16 hour single player campaigns that most non-RPG's stick to. There are also things to collect in the game, and you earn currency to unlock items in the main menu such as concept art and different renders to play the game with.

Overall Thoughts

The Last of Us was not a game I was really anticipating. It looked great from the point it was revealed, but my level of excitement just wasn't there. I'm really glad I went against my excitement to check this one out. The Last of Us is one of those games that we'll look back on 15-20 years from now and say, "That was the game that spawned a franchise." Why? Because of the story and the execution. Immediately after this game ended, I wanted to see what was next in-store for this world being taken over by spores, of all things. The game is extremely linear, which I would usually frown upon, but The Last of Us knows where it's going and doesn't spin a convoluted yarn by throwing in tidbits just to make their combat system work. I can't get across enough that this game should be experienced by everyone with a PS3. It's an experience I'll certainly never forget. The game isn't perfect, but it's close. Those frustrating moments down the stretch, awful swimming mechanics, and some of the graphical hiccups (texture popping) definitely bog it down a tiny bit, but it sheds these hindrances and remains a great game. Just taking a moment to stop and soak in the world that has been overrun by vegetation and shaken to it's core is breathtaking. To anyone saying that the PS3 doesn't have the exclusives to support the console, the proof is in the pudding...

Anime Novel Of The Month - June 2013 "Samurai Executioner"

By Rage:

For my first edition of ANOM, I will be reviewing “Samurai Executioner” by Kazuo Koike & Goseki Kojima. I would’ve read the first one if Newark Public Library had it but of course, they never have all the books to any graphic novel series. This series takes place in “Edo-period” Japan: a time period that was filled with greed, sex, and violence. In this volume, “Two Bodies, Two Minds” We have two stores ….one of them I will tell you about. The first revolves around “O-tsuya” A troubled woman who witnessed her loved ones burn to death home on two occasions. She now works as a geisha in a brothel house who doesn’t talk so much. During a celebration in the village, the brothel home catches fire while o-tsuya is spotted on the roof of the burning building….NAKED! A Sake server scales the building in an attempt to rescue her however; she tries to engage in sexual activity with the server on top of the burning brothel house! It takes a team effort but they eventually get the sex-craved beast down. It is then we learn of the cause of O-Tsuya’s sudden urges, she has a split personality or what’s known in the medical field as “Dissociative identity disorder”. When she’s around the flame, turns into a sex-craving animal. When she isn’t, she’s a very quiet, “to-herself”, Innocent kind of geisha.

Picture
She is taken into custody where she is repeatedly raped by perverted male inmates as she awaits her trial. I personally LOVED this one, having not touched the 1st volume, I’m instantly hooked. I will admit this isn’t for everyone, especially the ladies. You have to keep in mind that this took place in a time where women were just sex toys, and were punished the same way a man would. The panels are drawn perfectly; both stories are pretty exciting, it has a neat little glossary for you JAP-challenged folks. I won’t spoil the rest of this gem but if you happen to find this in a library or bookstore do get your hands on it – OVER, AND OUT FUCKERS.

The Lex List: Top Teams to Own in Madden 25

6/13/2013

Picture
The NFL is a business. Sure, it's fun and exciting... it's entertainment! But over all else, the NFL is a business and it's out to make as much money as it can. But even deeper than that, the owners of the 32 individual NFL teams are also out to make as much money as they can, alongside delivering an experience like no other.

Madden NFL Football needs no introduction. It comes out every year, and it is loved by many and scrutinized by even more.  Sure, EA could rest on their laurels and release the same game every year with no cares given (see: MLB 2Kx), but they don't, and this year the team has decided to bring back the much beloved Owner Mode, which was last seen fully featured in the last generation of consoles. Not only will you be able to choose from a coach or a player to experience 30 years of the NFL, but now you will be able to either take control of an existing owner or create a brand new owner, complete with character background! Sure, you could just pick your favorite team to own, but why not go outside the box and control another, different, more challenging team simultaneously. You can totally do that thanks to EA bringing back 32-team offline control (THANKS, EA!!!). Well, in today's Lex List, I'm going to look at 5 of the most interesting teams to take over in Madden NFL 25 in the AFC. This is part one of a two part article, and I'll be looking at the NFC in part two, so keep an eye out for that soon!

Picture

5) Buffalo Bills

Picture
Ralph Wilson Stadium
Stadium Opened: 1973
Last Playoff Appearance: 1999
Key Player: EJ Manuel

Whenever I'm choosing a team to control in Franchise Mode, the Bills are always a contender. Cool uniforms aside, there's an interesting rebuilding dynamic. QB EJ Manuel was a surprise pick for most in the first round this past April, and he'll have an immediate position battle with veteran Kevin Kolb, who recently signed by the team. For me, that makes Manuel the key player of this team. Do you believe in Manuel as much as the previous regime did? Do you trade him and look forward to next season's draft? Ralph Wilson Stadium is one of the older stadiums in the NFL, and the Bills spend less than half their season playing games in it. Half is on the road and a game is played in Toronto, which brings up the next interesting point: Do you relocate the team to Toronto and expand the NFL? Do you stay in Buffalo but rebuild a stadium? Do you just upgrade Ralph Wilson? So much to consider if you choose to hold the fate of Buffalo fans in your hands.

4) San Diego Chargers

Picture
Qualcomm Stadium
Year Opened: 1967
Last Playoff Appearance: 2010
Key Player: Phillip Rivers

Qualcomm is OLD. The NFL has denied a new Super Bowl in San Diego until they get a new Stadium. Now, you could just build them a new stadium if you care about this, or you could just renovate what you have and be good with it. Or... or you could move the team an hour away to Los Angeles. Undoubtedly, LA will be a city that will front most of the bill for relocation. Some San Diego fans might feel betrayed, but those that still want to see the Charger could make the short drive to the new stadium. Plus, the LA Chargers doesn't sound all too bad (hears SD fans shouting in the distance)! Phillip Rivers is your star, but he and the talent around him haven't been the same in a few seasons. Is it time to build around Phillip again, or will you look to the future?

3) Jacksonville Jaguars

Picture
EverBank Field
Year Opened: 1995
Last Playoff Appearance: 2007
Key Player: Luke Joeckel

Stadium is not an issue here, but there are plenty more issues to deal with. I think the hardest thing to do in this situation would be to STAY in Jacksonville and rebuild both the roster and the fanbase. If you choose to go this route, you could snag Tim Tebow from the Patriots and start the Tebow Revolution. You could have a fire sale and build from scratch, although that might take the most amount of time. Then there's my pick for Key Player: rookie Luke Joeckel. Building a team around Joeckel would be a solid plan, but there are many forks in the road with the Jaguars roster, especially when it comes to QB, which is a colossal mess to clean up at the moment. There's been heavy talk in real life about moving the team to Los Angeles or even London, which are both options in the game. If you do decide to move the team, will you keep the brand new logo and uniforms, or just start from the beginning? The amount of work here and the branching options make Jacksonville a team to consider.

2) Cleveland Browns

Picture
FirstEnergy Stadium
Year Opened: 1999
Last Playoff Appearance: 2002
Key Player: Trent Richardson

Oh, the troubles Cleveland's seen. With just minor success in the early 00's, this 2nd generation Browns team has struggled to find a winning formula after they were awarded their club back in 1999. Over the past few years, names like Brady Quinn and Pat Shurmur haunt the heads of Browns fans everywhere. It would be best to just relocate and try to forget this sequel ever happened. Or would it? Do you have the gall to take Cleveland's team away from them again? Do you have the fortitude to gut an entire city where there are little guts left? If you do decide to stay, and that's probably a BIG "if," then rebuilding around Trent Richardson is probably your best option. Although injury is a concern, the potential of Richardson is off the charts. What you decide to do at QB is up to you. For me personally, Brandon Weedon was a curious selection to begin with, and now journeyman Jason Campbell is with his fourth team of his career, so I'd probably get what I could for them and use a lower rated QB for a season. It may take a few years if you decide to stay the course, but Cleveland needs a shot in the arm, especially when their brand new owner is in the trouble he's in in real life. It's up to you to crush Browns fans happiness or rebuild the team into a championship contender.

1) Oakland Raiders

Picture
O.Co Coliseum
Year Opened: 1966
Last Playoff Appearance: 2002
Key Player: Darren McFadden

Now that Al Davis has passed on, it's the perfect time to restructure the philosophy of the Oakland Raiders. Notice I said "philosophy" and not "mentality." The Raiders are the Raiders, and that's who they should be. However, their method hasn't worked for at least a decade, and it's time to switch things up. Being from Northern California (and no, I'm not a fan of either OAK or SF) saying the Raiders move out of state would be blasphemous. There are a few options IN California to consider though. The first would be Sacramento. "Hey Lex, Sacramento can't even hold down an NBA team!" While I don't claim that Sacramento is the greatest sports town ever, it's time to give them a chance with football. With San Francisco moving into their new stadium next year, it would be ideal for Oakland to move further away from SF, distancing themselves from what is seen as "two teams in the same city." Another option is Los Angeles, where the Raiders have previously resided. However, I feel that LA is no longer a good fit for the Raiders in this modern age. LA has become more glitzy, and I think Oakland needs to go the opposite direction. Though, if you wanted to move the team to LA, I'm sure the city would be willing to pay for nearly everything, which would be a great start to the next 30 years in Oakland. Then there's the issue of the roster. Out is Carson Palmer, who is failed project #142 at QB for Oakland. There now is Matt Flynn, who has never been a true starter in the NFL. Your key player would be Darren McFadden, but he hasn't played a full season in his entire NFL career. Even worse, it's been two years since he's had anything resembling a successful season. He'll probably still be valuable to use in Madden, but there are two key positions that you'll have to account for right off the bat. There are countless other issues on both Offense and Defense, but I still don't see Oakland as a "bad team." If used properly, the Raiders could actually find a way to squeeze into the Division race at the end of the year. All in all, Those are just two of the very unique directions you could take the Raiders in. And, if you decide to take them out of state, you'd probably have quite a Madden memory to hold dear, that's for sure.

Thank you for checking out this edition of The Lex List. Part 2 (NFC teams) will be coming soon, so make sure you check in with RantemRadio.com frequently. You can follow me on Twitter @The_Lexicon as well as this website @RantemRadio. Comment below with some of the teams you think would be a fun experience, and we just might mention you on the next episode of The Game Time Report! Thanks again for reading...

Microsoft Elaborates on Used Games on the XBOX One by Lex

Microsoft has spilled the beans on how the handling of your games will work on their new console. IGN has a story featuring quotes from Microsoft themselves explaining the functions and limitations when it comes to the second market of XBOX One games.
"With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."
Other quotes explain the possibilities of loaning a friend your game, and trading in/selling your disc...
"your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you." The company added that “Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.”
Brian Wiedey, proprietor of PastaPadre.com (a site I frequent and recommend), commented on Twitter about the matter. The quote is one that I am in agreement with.

The article also covers Kinect and the ability to stop and pause the device whenever you please via your settings. Even though this answered a few questions, it brings up several other questions in it's place. What do you think of Microsoft's new plan for the way your games will be handled? Be sure to let us know on the RantEM Facebook page or on Twitter @RantEMRadio. Wario and I will be covering this topic on our E3 Coverage Kick-Off Show this Sunday, right after the debut of "What Are You Reading" with host Surfer. We hope to see you all in the chat at 6pm EDT right here on RantEMRadio.com...
