TNA Gives Me Headaches & More...

By Double A:

It's about time that I do something I normally don't do.  And that's take pen to paper and talk about some of the things that really make me scratch my head.  And if you have been listening to The Rant for last couple of months, we have been especially harsh on Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and it's current president, Dixie Carter.  Hell, I will have really harsh with them since the first day we have been on the air.  But it's seems lately that they really can't get a hold of reality.  And unfortunately, whether I am a fan or not, TNA is on the verge of closing it's doors forever if they continue on their current trend.

So why am I so bitter?  Or a better question is why do I even care?  That's the problem.  I actually do care.  I don't have to be a fan of their product to want them to be a good viable wrestling promotion.  If they do good, all wrestling promotions do good and step up their own respective games in the process.  Without somebody nipping at the heels of the WWE and Vince McMahon, you can clearly see that they aren't trying.  Yea they have a really good show every now and then.  But for the most part, any given episode of Monday Night RAW or Friday Night SmackDown leaves something to be desired.  You could argue that NXT is a great show, and it is.  But a television show that is available strictly to Hulu Plus and foreign counties, does not convince me enough to say they are trying.  I remember a time when the wrestling shows were good consistently week in and week out.

But back to TNA.  If TNA and Dixie Carter would listen to the fans who don't watch or have a problem with their show, she would see that something is really wrong.  Let's see the proof in the United States alone.  A real wrestling fan will watch any show from any promotion right?  Well considering RAW normally does 3 times the audience then Impact Wrestling shows me there is either A) an untapped audience or B) an audience that don't care and/or don't like what they have offer.

And I tend to think it's more "B" then anything else.  And if that is the case, well shit, they really need to read or listen to what some of us say.  And don't brush us off either.  It just makes us more upset and want to watch less.  #AskDixie was trending Worldwide Last Week and the reason was the fans know Dixie Carter will not listen to the fans.  So they sent her questions that had absolutely no merit, were obscene, and stupid.  She thinks by issuing a hashtag will show us she connects to the audience and listens to us.  That could not be further from the truth.  Because if she really was listening to the audience, TNA would not be in the current financial ruin that it's in.  It's basic Business 101.  You put out a product people like, they show you that they like it by buying tickets to the events and ordering pay-per-views.  Neither of which is happening.  And nothing anybody tells me will convince me otherwise.

Picture
Am I taking into considering it's not easy running a wrestling promotion?  Absolutely!  But for somebody who has been in the business for 10 years and has a staff of former wrestlers and wrestling executives working the office, things really should not be that bad.  I mean things are still being run as if it's their first day on the job.  This stuff could have flown in 2002 but not in 2013.  When World Championship Wrestling closed in 2001, the sport I love took a huge hit.  And the overall industry suffered.  The spark was gone and complacency set in big time.  And that's what is happening right now.

It's now or never TNA and Dixie Carter.  If you want to continue as a wrestling company and have a banner history that many promotions do, time to change.  If not....and you want to continue operate the way you without changing, tell us the fans now so that we can prepare for the end.  We won't waste your time so don't waste ours.  And quite honestly, I want to rid myself of this headache you tend to give me.  I respect your efforts in this sport.  But sometimes just trying isn't good enough.  Vince McMahon might be an asshole and has gone somewhat senile.  But there is a very good reason why he is #1.

Album Gem Of The Past:  Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo

By Tommy Dennis:

This is a tribute to a great and historic album.  In 1978, an up and coming band from the mid west released it's first major studio album.  From image to sound to it's name..one thing became obvious.  Music would never be the same again.  It was the birth of De-evolution...or Devo.  If you are young, this album is a great way to discover an amazing album with sound ahead of it's time.  If you are older and remember this LP, it is a great time to reconnect and enjoy this great masterpiece.

The record starts out with a bang via the song "uncontrollable urge" a song that has a new lease on life thanks to being the opening theme for the hit show "ridiculousness."  The second song "satisfaction" is a Rolling Stones classic cover with a lot of energy.  These first few songs show Devo as a classic punk band, using very little electronic synthesisers.

As the album blows through its middle there is nothing lost in quality.  I love the middle tracks Space Junk, Gut Feeling, Jocko Homo, and Mongloid.  These songs represent a transformation from Punk to an early version of New Wave. This is a huge factor and contribution in the band's legend.

The final few tracks are quirky but none the less very entertaining.  Shrivel up and come back Jonie helped  to make this album and band withstand the test of time.  By finishing strong the Devo album keeps the energy going without any filler.

Devo Q: Are We Not Men was the perfect album say goodbye to Punk and hello to New Wave.  It keeps an up tempo and pleasant beat throughout out all 11 songs.  Devo's ability to keep a simple edge but still display intraquit lyrics and harmonies is pure genius.  This amazing album is a snap shot record of the fuzing of two historic and challenging genres at a critical time in our musical history.  Because of it's cultural and historic significance I must give the first Devo studio album a 10 plus rating.  Listen to this album as soon as possible and be amazed!

Under The Radar:  The Top Acts Who Should Be Next Inducted Into The Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame

7/22/2013

By Tommy Dennis:

It has been about three months since the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame righted some significant wrongs and finally inducted Rush and Heart.  With those HUGE injustices made right...the long arduous process shall soon start to select the 2014 class.  Let this serve as the first shot fired and my two cents on the next three outrageous snubs that the Hall needs to address next:
Picture
KISS

This one is a no-brainer.  For a few years towards the end of the 70's this was the BIGGEST rock band in the world!  They were a household name with a huge sound and bigger image.  To this day it is hard to go anywhere in the world and find anyone over the age of 40 who doesn't know who these guys are.  The list of musicians influenced by Kiss are too large to mention.  This band also revolutionized rock and roll merchandizing, which prior to Kiss was a largely untapped resource.  Combine this with the devoted Kiss Army, who are still packing the live shows and buying the bands albums makes this an easy choice!

Picture
DEVO

For some reason, this band never seems to get much mention in the debate over who deserves to be in the hall.  Started in 1972, Devo were every bit a part of the Punk/New Wave movement as Blondie, The Clash, The Ramones or any other band was.  In addition, their innovation with synthesizers and various forms of electronic music formed the groundwork and influence for most of the electro-pop music that is so popular today.  Combine this with the unique visual look and concepts that did not exist prior to Devo and the Cleveland-based Rock Hall SHOULD be inducting this locally-created treasure immediately.

Picture
Whitney Houston

Cue the haters who say Whitney is not rock...The Hall has already opened the door for pop performers by inducting Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna.  As a result, there is no way put that group in and leave out the late Ms. Houston.  Her accomplishments are undeniable.  She was and is a worldwide icon that sold millions of albums and filled arenas throughout the world!  We are probably talking about the second most powerful female soul voice of all time outside of Aretha Franklin! The Rock Hall committee needs to honor Whitney Houston's memory and induct her in 2014.  The main reason she probably is not in yet is that most people assume she already is!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

This is by no means a complete list.  Acts like Deep Purple, Foreigner, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Phil Collins (solo), and Hall and Oates are just a few of a huge list that have been overlooked.  These top 3 I highlighted were selected mostly because of the spectrum of influence they have cast over so many different genres of music and classes of fans.  To get the above mentioned acts to their rightful place in the Hall of Fame would be a huge follow up to the goodwill achieved this year!

Who's NXT? #1: Leo Kruger

Picture
"Who's NXT" is an NXT spotlight article to give WWE fans a quick look at some of the up and coming stars of the WWE.

Leo Kruger

Picture
Leo Kruger has been a bright spot in FCW for years now, a 2 Time former FCW Champion. His character has evolved greatly over his time in FCW starting out as a less fleshed out character with solid in ring work to now having a very interesting character of a South African mercenary. Here is one of his promos from NXT to give you a feel of the kind of character you are getting out of Leo Kruger:

He has two finishers that are great compliments to his character:
The first is called the "Kruger's End" a hangman's facebuster.
The second is the "GC3" which is an inverted key lock.
The standout feud thus far in NXT for Kruger was his feud with Justin Gabriel, they used their South African roots to make a storyline involving them being childhood enemies and what we got out of it were some really solid matches out of it. I felt like it was best to present a match that has him in his current evolution of his character.

Movie Review:  Grown Ups 2

7/14/2013

Picture
By Tommy Dennis:

It's summer time and that means there are certain things you can count on.  Baseball, Barbecues, and an Adam Sandler comedy movie.  He is back with his friends Chris Rock, David Spade, and Kevin James for the follow up to the surprise hit from the summer of 2010.

Despite the movie following much of the typical Sandler movie formula of the last 20 years...this sequel is definitely an improved and funnier version of it's predecessor.  Grown Ups 2 is much edgier and adult oriented than the first.  The emphasis in this film is where it belongs which is adult, slapstick entertainment for those of us over age twelve.

The movie picks up with the starring Feder family now living full time at Main character Lenny's (Sandler) hometown.  With the help of his friends, Lenny stands up to an assortment of bullies and nemesis from past and present.  In addition, the childhood friends deal with different family challenges.  As always, it's safe to bet on a happy ending.

Do not go watch this movie expecting the proverbial wheel to be reinvented on this sequel. Like all Happy Madison productions Grown Ups 2 follows the same formula you have probably seen a million times.  Many of the typical bizarre guest stars are back for this one.  Steve Buschemi, Tim Meadows, Nick Swardson, and Peter Dante have guest roles that are very similar to previous Sandler-film roles of years past.  In typical fashion: Sandler is the hero, Chris Rock does black jokes, Kevin James is the stereotypical fat guy, and David Spade is the butt of many jokes.  Again, originality is not where this movie shines.

With that said, there are still some original pieces to Grown Ups 2 that make it a better, more entertaining sequel.  Shaquille O'neal, Taylor Lautner, and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin are fresh faces that add new life to the sequel with their over the top performances.  This second installment also achieved greater results with a "less is more" approach.  That is "less" of the kids doing cute things and "more" of the main stars interacting as friends instead of as a small part of multiple families.

Grown Ups 2 gets an adult sized 7.5 out of 10 rating here.  It's not a trail blazing type of flick but for the film franchise as a whole it is an improvement over the original.  Sometimes a back to basics approach is what is needed in this time of reboots and remakes.

NCAA Football 14 Review

NCAA Football 14

Published and Developed by EA Sports/Tiburon

Available Now

Review Platform: PS3

Reviewed by: Lexicon
EA Sports is back with it's annual College Football title: NCAA Football 14. It's also a return to the series for me, having felt betrayed last year by the omission of the sole reason I usually bought the NCAA game for: Importing rosters to Madden. But it wasn't just that, it was the gameplay of 13 that left me shrugging my shoulders and delivering the forearm shiver to the series for the first time since I started buying these games, starting with NCAA Football 2002. The demo left a lot to be desired last year and the new features EA tried to implement with the matrix-esque bullet time function made the game feel cheap. NCAA Football 13 has never been in my library of games and it probably never will. I just can't be sold on it (unless it's free, of couse).

Alas, it's a new year and I owed it to the series to at least download the demo, especially with the announcement that the Import Draft Class feature would be returning for 14. I played the demo, and honestly, it didn't blow me away. On the other hand, I heard nothing but glowing reviews from the majority of gamers that partook in the demo and wondered what they were seeing that I wasn't. Regardless of being unimpressed, I still bought 14 with the intention of using the rosters for Madden 25, which doesn't come out until late-August. After playing the game for the last 48 hours off-and-on, here's my take...

Gameplay

Gameplay is the true hero of NCAA Football 14. What's different this year? Something big. In NCAA Football, you can now make cuts using the left stick. Sharp cuts, too. Now, it might not sound big, but trust me, it's a game changer. You no longer have to fiddle around with the right stick to juke and cut up the field, although you can if you'd like. All you need to do is cut on the left stick while running, and BAM! You'll leave defenders in your dust... hypothetically. Whether you make the right cut is up to you. It's a natural motion that will allow you to surprise your opponent, and sometimes even surprise yourself! Players plant hard into the turf, and it's hilarious to see defender's "ankles break" when you humiliate them. Here's an example from one of my Dynasty Mode games:
The run blocking has improved as well, though it's not perfect. Most of the times, you'll see your blockers get after defenders down the field, but there are times where they take a play or two off. I get that not every play goes well on the blocking front in real life, but some of the missed blocks are as boneheaded as it gets. The pass trajectories work great and never once did I cry "SUPER LINEBACKER!" That's not to say plays weren't made ala Manti Te'O, but they were never outrageous.
PictureMy RB feeling the effects of Infinity 2.0
Making it's debut in the NCAA Football series is the Infinity Engine, EA's real time physics engine that first made it's first appearance in Madden 13. But this isn't just the Infinity Engine, it's the Infinity Engine 2.0! What's that, you ask? Basically, it's a finely tuned version of the regular Infinity Engine. It works pretty well, but it still holds a problem I had with the first engine after it was patched early in Madden 13's life cycle. Allow me to explain: In the Madden 13 demo, the Infinity Engine was a bit over-the-top, but that also made it very fun to play. Soon after Madden 13 was released, the game was patched to tone down the Infinity Engine. This, in a sense, neutered the engine for me, and worse yet, it still left the bugs and awkward animations for us to laugh at. Infinity Engine 2.0 is still on the tame side, but the awkward animations are gone for the most part. The thing that got me most excited to see was the way ball carriers put a hand out to brace themselves when running behind a blocker, whereas last year you would have ran into your blocker and tackled yourself, Mark Sanchez-style.

Also prominently featured this year is the popular Read Option offense, which works well and is a blast to use, once you pass the chemistry class that is the Oregon Playbook that is. Ok, so it's not that difficult to get, but you have to be on top of things at all times. This fast-paced style can turn disastrous if ran improperly. Luckily there's the all-new Nike Skills Trainer to lead the way! This mode is essentially a practice mode that allows you to experiment with the new controls and new playbooks in the game. Certainly a welcome addition to those who don't like to just jump into the fire.

A huge part of college football is the pageantry and atmosphere. It's something I always look for, and I'm happy to report that NCAA Football 14's atmosphere, while not spot on, is better. You'll hear and feel the difference between playing at San Jose State and playing at Boise State. All but one team (Baylor) seems to have their fight songs in this year, something that had been an issue in 13, as detailed by Owen Good of Kotaku. The crowd chants things like 7 Nation Army and Zombie Nation, both staples of real life college football. The crowd does fall flat at times when it shouldn't, however. Right after you make a big play that keeps you in the game or gives your team a late lead, often times you won't even hear a smidgen of crowd reaction.

Gameplay is the best it's been in the series, and it's about time that it's all come together. Gameplay is the glue for any game, and NCAA Football should be proud of the point it's gotten to.

Dynasty Mode

PictureTerry Rodgers, my ace WR, ended up being a 1st Round Draft Pick, giving me an extra 500 XP
Dynasty Mode doesn't look all that different from the previous 4 or 5 editions, but it is. That's thanks, in large part, to the new recruiting in the game. No longer will you have to worry divvying up time to visit your students or calling them on the phone to guess what sorts of things your potential new recruits are into. Instead, you are allotted points. Now, these points vary depending on your Coaching Level, so I can only go off of what I started out as. I decided to take a challenge, and I recommend you do the same if you're going to dive into this mode. That challenge was Offensive Coordinator (which I will now refer to from here on as OC) for the San Jose State Spartans. SJ St is a 1 Star (out of 5) prestige school, but had a good season last year and also has a potential top draft pick QB in David Fales. Of course NCAA doesn't have actual players names in the game, so his last name was Seward. EA is currently fighting a player likeness lawsuit, but that's for another article.

PicturePhoto courtesy of PastaPadre.com
You'll start your recruiting year off by looking at the pool of soon-to-be students, where they're ranked, where they're from, and what positions they play. You then target a list of recruits and that's when the points factor in. I was given 5,000 points per week to divide among the recruits as I saw fit, but I could only spend a max of 500 on each player. You also get bonus points that can exceed the 500 point maximum if you meet some of their criteria such as playing time, proximity to home, or a number of other situations. You'll be competing against a number of other schools, so you always need to be aware of where the recruit is leaning. For that there is a graph showing the contending schools and how many points apart they all are. I was scouting the #1 QB in the state, who happened to be interested in my little program, but Oregon got to him early and sealed the deal within the first half of the season. The next top target on my list was a DE from in-state. This DE was different in that he waited the whole season to choose his landing spot. I ended up losing him to Stanford by a measly 35 points. Thirty... Five...

Anyway, you'll also need to schedule some of your targeted recruits for school visits. You can choose to welcome them for a home game or a bye week. You only get a certain amount of points for a bye week, but a home game introduces many modifiers into the mix. These modifiers include goals as simple as winning a game or throwing for over 250 yards to more difficult tasks like getting a certain amount of sacks with a certain position. This makes nearly every game important in one way or another, whether that be to win for your current season ranking or to win for the future of your squad. This, combined with the fun gameplay, is what kept me wanting to play. You also have to be careful. There were many times where I was so focus on reaching the visiting recruits goals that I got off my gameplan and got in trouble of losing the game. There's a fine line you'll have to walk, and that keeps things exciting.

I went 11-3 with San Jose State, losing to #3 Stanford, Utah State, and #8 Boise State in the MWC Championship game. I won the MAACO Bowl in Las Vegas, and overall, I consider it to be a good year that we can continue to build off of. At the end of the year, I was offered a four year contract extension to return to San Jose State. I accepted, but you can also check out the other options available. I did notice some odd occurrences with the coaching carousel, such as Nick Saban (or the G. Williams to the generic roster names) won yet another National Championship beating out Johnny Manziel (who won another Heisman and put up even more ridiculous number than last season), but decided to leave Alabama for Virginia Tech. Things like that could potentially kill it for some players, but all-in-all it's a video game. Whacky stuff happens.

PicturePhoto courtesy of EASports.com
The biggest RPG element in 14's Dynasty Mode lies within the new Coach Skill Tree. As a coach, you earn XP (separate from the recruiting XP) by accomplishing small and large goals throughout the season. Smaller goals will consist of winning games and reaching certain game-by-game stat targets while larger goals will ask you to score 50 TD's in a season or sign a certain caliber recruit. That XP will boost your level, and those levels bring you perks. There are level caps for coordinators (level 27) and head coaches (somewhere around 50). Every time you level up, you get 1 point to spend in the Skill Tree. Honestly, it's hard to really call this a "Skill Tree," but I guess, in the most basic sense, it is just that. You won't be able to unlock certain perks without fully unlocking the lower perks first. Perks consist of a boost to your player's ratings to extra recruiting points. The recruiting perks will be the be the easiest to recognize right-out the gate, I would imagine. I personally didn't reach those perks as an OC.

Building your career from the bottom of being a small time coordinator to a big time head coach seems to have a lot of longevity. The bland presentation in the menus does bring Dynasty Mode down a notch or two, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to level-up my coach and improve my squad. If you start your career at the top, I can see the mode getting tedious much sooner, so as I stated before, I HIGHLY recommend starting from a smaller school. The gameplay had to be really solid to go along with this new dynasty mode, and thankfully that was all on point. There are some logic quirks with the AI when you're running only one side of the ball though. I was in Triple OT and had just scored a TD in the second possession to tie the game at 37. An extra point would have won the game, but the AI forced me to go for two, since the Head Coach controls Special Teams. Also, when you're playing as a coordinator, you don't get the full game presentation. Often times you'll miss the halftime show because you weren't controlling the game when the half hit, and you also won't see the game updates from Reece Davis throughout the game. There is a new ESPN score ticker on the bottom of the screen which is the best ticker I've ever seen in a game. The scores update in real time and the ticker will cut in with "priority scores" that directly affect your team and "upset alerts" when an unranked squad is downing a top 25 team. It's an enjoyable experience, and probably the most fun I've had with Dynasty Mode, ever.

Final Thoughts

So it all sounds pretty good right now, right? This has got to be the best game in the series.... RIGHT?! That's hard to say, to be honest. I like NCAA Football 14, but the problem with this game is polish. For all the neat new features and smoothed out gameplay, there are just as many rough areas. The CPU AI can be downright sickening with some of it's playcalling, especially late in games. The Infinity Engine seems to still be accounting for a ridiculous amount of dropped passes, an issue with the engine last year in Madden. The presentation can still be underwhelming, especially in bigger games like conference championships. There's currently a bug that has a large amount of teams sporting grey facemasks, a problem I didn't really think much of at first, but when you get teams like Virginia and Florida State wearing them, it's just not right. The game also looks murky and there is a lot of texture pop-ins. The crowd and many stadium backgrounds look awful. It seems almost as though graphics have regressed for EA Sports football games throughout this generation. Maybe that's something they're giving up in favor of other data being put onto discs.

The fact is that this will probably be the last time I play NCAA Football on this generation of consoles. By this time next year, I'll be waist deep in my PS4 and awaiting NCAA Football 15. NCAA Football 08 was my first game for my XBOX 360. The series has a very special place in my heart. But as good as NCAA is in some areas, it's also a reminder that it's time to move on. 14's a tough game to recommend to the casual gamer, but if you're a college football fan in the least, it's worth picking up. NCAA 14 is a game that can reach the National Championship, but it won't win the big game. Still, I can appreciate the product that was put out this year and I think you will, too.

Spring Breakers (2013)
Director: Harmony Korine
Starring: Selena Gomez, James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine
Now available on Blu-Ray and DVD
Review by: Lexicon
When I heard that Spring Breakers was being directed by Harmony Korine, I quickly ran to IMDB to make sure it was the same Harmony Korine who wrote the blunt-yet-wonderful "KIDS." After all checked out, and it was indeed the same Harmony, I sat and wondered why Harmony would be making a film in Spring Breakers that seemed to have some heavy marketing behind it. After all, I'm sure most of you have never heard of Korine, and those that have have probably only heard of KIDS. Harmony is an eclectic creator, and Spring Breakers was being advertised as a blockbuster flick about a very shallow subject.

Now, as I sit here writing this review, having just finished the film, I can safely say that this is a Harmony Korine film. That can be both a good and bad thing.

Spring Breakers is about four college students (Gomez, Hudgens, Benson, and Korine) and their desire to break away from mundane student life and experience the insanity that is Spring Break. Each girl has a different motive for the trip. Faith (Gomez) comes from a fairly sheltered upbringing and she regularly attends religious meetings held by a minister(?) played by none other than former WCW Heavyweight Champ, Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett actually fits the role really well, although his on-screen time is short. Candy (Hudgens) and Brit (Benson) seem to be unstable at best and are enabling each other's violent attitude. Cotty (Korine) gets dragged along for the ride and is somewhat in the middle between the two extremes. Rachel Korine is the wife of Harmony Korine and there has been some controversy as to whether Harmony was "pimping" his wife out with this film, as she has the most on-screen nudity of the four. And no, Gomez doesn't get naked. I really don't see a problem with the Korines choice, but some take movies more serious than they should.

My main statement for this film is: THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. That goes without saying for almost every film, but this is a really polarizing movie. The way it's shot is not typical. Many have said, "It's a bunch of music videos strung together." While that would be a shortsighted way to look at it, it's not entirely true. Yes, there's a lot of "static" in this movie to drive home the point of the Spring Break atmosphere. This "static" acts as somewhat of a safe zone. By static I mean partying. Drinking, drugs, nudity, and whatever else you throw in the wash. When the movie opens, all I could think about was how stupid Spring Break was. By the end of the film, all I could think about was how Spring Break is merely a vacation. This movie is all about what happens when you don't want to leave the party. What happens when you don't want to go back to the life you live day-in and day-out. This is where Alien (Franco) comes in...

The best performance, by far, comes from James Franco and his portrayal of Alien, a druglord who bails the girls out of jail after a drug raid on one of the Spring Break parties lands the young tarts in jail. Franco is so good in the role that I believe the movie would have been a miss for me had they found someone else to fill the role. Alien really propels the movie into "interesting" territory.
